I created this smoothie while in Costa Rica for my 30 day fellowship with Epicself. The mangos, papayas, pineapple were abundant and like nothing I get back in the States or Canada and I enjoyed them immensely! This Tropical Morning Power Smoothie takes me back to those magical moments of my time there whenever I have it. I hope it will create great morning memories for you too.

The best part about this smoothie is that it contains ingredients in a way that makes the nutrients bioavailable to you; which in simple terms means providing nourishment to deep within your body, all the way to your cells. In my book, “Live Vibrantly! 10 Steps To Maintain Youthfulness, Increase Energy and Restore Your Health” I go into a deeper explanation of this for you.

Normally I do not combine fruit with other foods, I always eat it separately on its own. Now the exception to that rule is papaya, mango and pineapple. The reason I don’t eat fruit with other food is because the sugar content tends to cancel out the protein digestion and absorption if combined with protein in a meal. These above mentioned fruits are an exception because of their high enzymatic content and action which aid digestion along with a high fiber content. These fruits also infuse us with many nutrients and health benefits. Here are some of those:

Papayas

  • are rich sources of antioxidant nutrients such as carotenes, vitamin C and flavonoids; the B vitamins, folate and pantothenic acid; and the minerals, potassium, copper, and magnesium; and fiber.

Mangos

  • contribute vitamin C, vitamin A & K, potassium, copper, calcium and iron, antioxidants such as zeaxanthin and beta-carotene.

Pineapple

  • contribute a wealth of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals, including potassium, copper, manganese, calcium, magnesium, vitamin C, beta carotene, thiamin, B6, and folate, as well as soluble and insoluble fiber.

I normally do not buy these fruits when back in the areas I frequent within the US or Canada because they have not been allowed to ripen properly therefore taste terrible (especially if you’ve ever eaten them in their natural environment!), are being imported and carry a huge carbon footprint. Due to the wealth of nutrients they offer though I will occasionally as a special treat purchase frozen, organic versions of these fruits. And since I am really missing Costa Rica right about now decided to treat myself and take a few trips down my taste memory.

And so without further ado I share with you my recipe:

Tropical Morning Power Smoothie

1 cup kale, chard, collard greens, spinach, salad greens or whatever are your favorite greens

1/4 cup sprouts and/or microgreens

1/2 avocado

1 tablespoon unpasteurized miso, mild flavored one

1 tablespoon hemp oil or coconut oil

1/2 cup organic mango or papaya or pineapple

1 inch of ginger root

1 inch of tumeric root

2 tablespoons of chia seeds

1 tablespoon hemp seeds

1 tablespoon unsweetened organic shredded coconut

1/4 teaspoon to 1 teaspoon spirulina (if your not used to spirulina start with a 1/4 teaspoon)

1 tablespoon raw cacao (optional)

And because I like it, I add 2 tablespoons of fresh cilantro – you decide if you want to or not

Filtered water

Add all ingredients to a high speed blender and fill with water to cover up to the half way mark. Add more water if you like it thinner and less if you like it thicker.

Enjoy!
